Anyone who works with SAP EWM (Extended Warehouse Management) and Inventory Management (IM) is familiar with the issue: goods transactions take place everywhere—in the warehouse, in production, in goods receipt, during stock transfers—and yet, at the end of the day, inventories and postings must match up perfectly.

EWM creates and confirms warehouse tasks.
Upon completion, EWM automatically triggers the appropriate IM posting code.

Why smart processes such as quality certificates in goods receipt with synchronous goods posting in SAP are doubly worthwhile

When everything runs smoothly in goods receipt, the whole company is happy. But in reality? Sometimes a test certificate is missing, the goods are booked anyway, quality problems arise later, and suddenly the big search for the cause begins. Sounds familiar? Why are quality certificates so important in goods receipt?

With the SAP S/4HANA release, SAP has taken an important step toward sustainable and traceable packaging cycles: the introduction of Serialized Returnable Packaging Materials (RPM). This new feature enables companies to seamlessly track reusable packaging such as crates, containers, or pallets—bringing not only environmental but also economic benefits.

What are Serialized Returnable Packaging Materials?

Returnable packaging materials (RPM) are durable packaging carriers that are used multiple times between suppliers and customers—for example, mesh boxes, plastic containers, or special pallets. With the serialization of these packaging materials, SAP is introducing a unique identification for each individual carrier—similar to serial numbers for devices or machines.

The aim of the solution:

How does Serialized RPM in SAP work?

The technical interaction

1. EWM GTS

In the shipping process in decentralized EWM, the delivery is generated via the core ERP and then processed in EWM. For a GTS integration, this means that the delivery is automatically transferred to GTS for legal verification (e.g. embargo check, export license), EWM only carries out the goods issue if GTS has issued the release and the export accompanying documents (ABD) can be generated directly in GTS.

2. TM GTS

TM plays a central role in transportation planning and execution. In conjunction with GTS, transports are already checked for export control requirements during planning, export or import documents can be created automatically for each transport and customs procedures (e.g. transit procedures or carnet procedures) can be integrated.

3. EWM TM

Of course, the integration between EWM and TM should not be forgotten. It enables the seamless transfer of shipping orders (freight orders), automated communication about loading times, availability and means of transport, as well as real-time tracking and optimized transport cost calculation.

SAP Transportation Management: Planning functionalities

In today’s world, efficient transportation management plays a crucial role in a company’s success. SAP Transportation Management (SAP TM) is an all-in-one solution that helps your company optimize transportation processes, reduce costs and increase customer satisfaction. In this article, we will go through some of the different planning options offered by SAP TM and explain them for you.

The aim of the integration is to automatically provide materials directly from the warehouse. Inventory management is efficient and all processes are automated. Only a few manual interventions are necessary. Service orders are seamlessly synchronized and managed in real time.

Transportation planning with SAP Transportation Management

The SAP TM planning processes are triggered by customer orders, purchase orders or deliveries, among other things. Creating one of these documents generates the so-called freight unit in SAP TM, which is the smallest, plannable business document and physically represents the goods to be transported.

These freight units are planned in a freight order for road and rail transports and in a freight booking for sea or air transports. The freight order contains all the information about the planned transportation and can be physically represented as the loaded truck. The freight booking in turn represents a container space booking on a cargo ship or a cargo space booking in an airplane.

The central interface of SAP TM, the heart of the system, is the so-called Transport Cockpit, in which the entire planning process can be carried out. The Transport Cockpit is highly customizable and has various customizing options to optimize the user experience and make day-to-day business tasks as pleasant and efficient as possible.

Some of the tasks within the transportation cockpit include

Manual planning
Carrier selection
Generation of freight orders and bookings
Generation of delivery & transport proposals
VSR optimization
Load planning
Triggering of tendering processes

The planning activities can be carried out manually, automatically, interactively or in the background.

Subdivision into Basic Shipping & Advanced Shipping

SAP S/4HANA Transportation Management is divided into two licenses. On the one hand, we have the Basic Shipping Model, which is already integrated in the S/4HANA license, and the Advanced Shipping Model, for which an additional license is required. Planning with Basic Shipping

Manual planning

Manual planning consists of two variants:

In the transportation cockpit, select the requirements documents to be planned, e.g. freight units and the respective requirements capacity, e.g. vehicle resources. The capacity document, e.g. a freight order, is created using the “Assign selected elements” button.
Creation via drag & drop: Here, the respective requirement document is dragged onto the requirement capacity, or vice versa, and the freight order is generated.
It is also possible to create an empty capacity document from the transport cockpit, which can be planned with freight units at a later date.

Various planning strategies can be defined for manual planning in Customizing for the transport cockpit. These define which steps are to take place during the planning process.

Planning with Advanced Shipping:

The map planning

Planning on the map can be activated from the transport cockpit. The map shows all unplanned freight units and vehicle resources. These can be assigned to each other using drag & drop and thus trigger the creation of the freight order.

Gantt chart

Gantt charts are often used in project planning. They help to visualize resources and the transport sequence. Like map planning, the Gantt chart is fully integrated into the transport cockpit.

The freight orders and resources are displayed here as time bars and the transports can also be planned manually using drag & drop.

Automatic planning: VSR Optimizer

The Vehicle Scheduling and Routing Optimizer takes into account the routing and the order in which resources arrive at specific locations. The optimizer evaluates possible route changes and the effects of these changes on transport planning, thus helping to avoid delivery delays and subsequent costs.

The aim of the optimizations is to assign the freight units to the vehicle resources, to determine the route and sequence of the transport units per vehicle resource in such a way that all conditions are met and the total costs are minimized. The optimizer achieves this through a population-based meta-heuristic that uses selection principles from various algorithms.

The VSR optimizer uses the freight units and capacities to create a transport plan from freight orders.

Existing freight orders from a previous optimization run or from manual planning are also processed. Once the transport plan has been completed for the time being, it is modified step by step by rescheduling freight units to a different resource or adjusting the delivery sequence again.

Transportation proposals

The VSR optimizer generates alternative transport proposals for a freight unit using the “Generate transportation proposals” function.

The transportation proposals offer a good option for transparently displaying further transportation options outside the optimizer run.

Shortcut planning

With shortcut planning, the freight order is automatically created without a freight unit. These are skipped. In the previous planning variants, after creating a sales order, purchase order or stock transfer order, a freight unit is created in TM, which we use to plan our freight order. This step is skipped and a freight order is created immediately.

The purpose of the shortcut process is to be able to skip all planning steps, as these are not required in certain scenarios.

For example, if we already receive all the information we need for the transport from a sales order, we can deactivate the creation of a freight unit and consideration of a freight unit type in Customizing and instead store a freight order type, which creates the freight order immediately.

Intelligent linking through new SAP function

EWM service order integration within an SAP S/4HANA conversion is an important process for efficiently linking service processes with warehouse management. Service orders from SAP S/4HANA Service (formerly CS – Customer Service) or SAP Field Service Management (FSM) are integrated with warehouse logistics in SAP EWM.

Order integration process

A service order is created in SAP S/4HANA Service or FSM and the required materials are stored in the order.
SAP checks whether the required materials are available in the warehouse. If material is missing, a procurement or stock transfer is triggered. The material requirement is then automatically transferred to SAP EWM as a warehouse requisition.
SAP EWM controls picking and goods issue and creates a delivery request for the service order. The warehouse staff carry out the picking.
The material is transferred to the service technician or the production line, who confirms the material consumption. The consumption posting is made in SAP S/4HANA. The stock is automatically updated in EWM.
The consumed materials are recorded in the service order. The costs are passed on and an invoice is created.
The order is completed.

What is SAP Transportation Management?

SAP Transportation Management is an integral module within the SAP Supply Chain Management (SCM) Suite. Integration option between EWM and TM

The integration between transportation planning and warehouse management has always played a major role for our customers. With the Adv SR process, SAP offers a new integration option between the two modules SAP Transportation Management (TM) and SAP Extended Warehouse Management (EWM). What exactly does that mean?

What is Advanced Shipping & Receiving?

With Adv SR, SAP is releasing an integrated and holistic E2E process between S/4HANA Transportation Management and Extended Warehouse Management, which considerably simplifies communication between these modules. Among other things, it supports multi-warehouse scenarios within a freight order. As a user, you get additional help with coordination from the arrival of a truck at the gate to the final receipt in the warehouse.

Functions of Advanced Shipping & Receiving

The Advanced Shipping & Receiving process is based on the SAP TM freight order (FO) and therefore no longer uses the transportation unit (TU) from EWM.

With the abolition of the TU, the Adv SR adds two new objects:

The Consignment Order:
The consignment order in TM represents a business object to group multiple transportation requests based on certain business criteria, e.g. same source & destination location, same delivery date or same business partner. The consignment order serves as an important basis for the business partners involved in the same business process. The consignment order also contains a unique ID, which serves as a reference for the business partners.
The loading/unloading point:
The loading and unloading point is passed from SAP TM to EWM. They represent a group of gates.

With these additions and the simplified integration between warehouse and transportation, new functions and improvements in the processes are made possible.

Multi-pick / multi-drop: The same truck can be unloaded and reloaded at the same location during a multi-stop route, using only one business object. This enables better capacity utilization and a reduction in transport costs.

Cross-warehouse loading & unloading: Thanks to the new loading & unloading point, which allows different warehouse systems to be assigned to a loading point, it is now possible to load and unload stock from EWM-managed and non-EWM-managed warehouses onto the same truck.

Easier integration between business partners: thanks to automatic EDI communication for consignment orders, borderos and creation of full truck loads including shipping. Since only one document is shared with all business partners, there are no more difficulties in updating or synchronizing data with different documents.

Unlike before, the process is no longer aborted during error handling if message errors such as master data inconsistencies or reference errors occur. Instead, a business object is now created with the missing information and the user can repair or correct it manually or automatically.

Direct comparison with TU Integration

The Adv SR functionality reduces significant redundancies. In the previous, more complex TU-based integration (transport unit), each system had its own objects – the freight order in TM and the transport unit in EWM – which corresponded to the freight order. Different user interfaces and a lack of harmonization severely limited user-friendliness. In addition, integration often required additional development.

As a result of these difficulties and new requirements, SAP has now developed the Advanced Shipping & Receiving process.

In summary, we achieve a clear harmonization of the inbound and outbound processes, with a central freight view and a central status (start of loading, start of unloading, goods issue, etc.).
